On Saturday, November 21 2015, the Allegan County Suicide Prevention Coalition will be sponsoring a free premier movie event to view Hope Bridge at ACATEC (2891 – 116th Avenue, Allegan). The event hopes to raise awareness of the stigma of mental health issues and suicide prevention.
The coalition encourages all community members to attend the free event, especially those who have contemplated suicide, those who have lost a loved one to suicide and for “lifeguards”, or those who have been affected by depression and suicide and want to make a difference for others.
“Hope Bridge” stars Kevin Sorbo from the movie “God’s not Dead” and Booboo Stewart from “Twilight”. Its purpose is to educate the community on the effects of depression up to and including suicide. A must see movie for everyone whether you or a loved one suffers from depression.
Depression is one of the most prevalent diseases in the world today. Yet the disease is mostly quiet and kept isolated either by the individual or by the affected family. Nearly one out of five suffer with some level of mental illness including depression. There exists a 50% chance that you will suffer with a form of depression if a family member has experienced it. More than 40,000 people commit suicide in our country each year with 1100 of those from Michigan. While the suicides cannot be all assumed to be the result of depression it still is the leading cause of suicide.
Light refreshments will be available in the lobby at 9:30am before the 10am viewing with a short panel discussion immediately following the movie. Community resources and information will be available throughout this event. This movie is suitable for 13 years and older. Please be aware seating is limited for this viewing.
